Total Eclipse of the Sun 🌒

...here's five events we'd recommend!

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you, but “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler has been stuck in my head on repeat lately. And it’s obvious why – Indy is in the path of totality for a solar eclipse! I know I’ll be outside with my solar eclipse glasses (click here for a list of safe brands) at 3:06 p.m. on April 8.

With thousands of visitors coming to town to check it out, ensure you have gas, groceries, and all other essentials ahead of time – the roads will be very busy on the big day. Also, if you have furry friends at home, close your curtains and blinds so they don’t hurt their little eyes looking out at the sun!

An astronomically significant event is approaching! Here are some unique ways to celebrate this monumental occasion.

If you’re willing to drive an hour south for the big day, check out IU Bloomington’s Hoosier Cosmic Celebration April 8 at 1 p.m. This program will feature ten-time Grammy nominee Janelle Monáe, Star Trek’s William Shatner, and Mae Jemison, the first American woman of color to travel to space. Tickets are $15 and up.

Want literary entertainment, free eclipse-viewing glasses, and a book discussion of The Cold Millions by Jess Walter – all for free – as part of your eclipse day? Look no further than Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library’s event A Big Eye in the Sky: Solar Eclipse Celebration. The museum will be open 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the literary festivities will begin at 1 p.m.

On April 6, 1-4 p.m., at Aurora PhotoCenter, you can prepare for the solar eclipse by using a pinhole to take photos and create a safe eclipse viewer! For just $20-25, you will receive a workshop in creating a pinhole camera; then, you will modify your camera to make a viewer to see the solar eclipse safely. Space is limited; register soon.

Camp out at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the solar eclipse! At the Fairgrounds’ special event, you can reserve a campsite and stay overnight April 7-8 or walk/drive in on April 8. Live music, concessions, and libations will be available. Tickets are $10 and up.

It’s a Total Eclipse of the Art at Newfields! Starting at 11 a.m., you can enjoy the Indianapolis Museum of Art and LUME. Then, head to The Garden to view the total eclipse. There will be vendors, live music, DJs, and more! Tickets are $29 and up.

One great thing about working at PATTERN is the incredible people you get to chat with in the office. We love catching up with our interns on their recent favorites – so we thought we’d share that joy with you, too! Here’s what they said about their recent faves:

Frances: Dune Part 2. “I saw it in Denmark--I was trying to kill time before my flight! I really like the idea of a false prophecy and asking: is it a prophecy or is it the person?”

Jacob: First Fridays and Third Thursdays. And coffee. “For First Fridays, my favorite places to go are the Harrison Center and Mystery Fun Club. As for coffee, my usual order is a mocha.”

Salma: Breakfast at Tiffany’s. “This movie is all about finding one's identity, the struggles we go through to be authentic despite societal expectations.”

Selena: Godzilla Minus One. “My late stepdad was a huge comics and Godzilla fan so my mom and I saw this one in theaters! It made me feel things Hollywood films have not in a while.”

Hiya, thanks for reading! I’m Emily, one of PATTERN’s Strategic Communications Fellows. As a locally-produced playwright and a former employee of the Indy Arts Council, I am intimately familiar with Indianapolis’s arts & culture scene, and I hope to bring that in-depth knowledge to you through the newsletter!

Growing up in Indy, the arts & culture community nurtured me so much through community theatre and local museum visits. I’m excited to now give back to this community!
