Where are you from?

I am originally from Auburn, Indiana, a small town just north of Fort Wayne known for old cars. I now live in Bloomington, Indiana.

Tell us a little bit about your educational background.

I attended Indiana University Bloomington and initially pursued degrees in biology and journalism in hopes of becoming a dentist—I’m still not sure where journalism would have fit into that plan. I started taking photography classes in high school, and continued taking courses in college to keep up with it as a hobby. IU’s photo faculty, however, is very persuasive. After some convincing, I switched from a biology major to a photo major, while still pursuing my degree in journalism. Ultimately, it’s the best decision I ever made.

What is your proudest moment, and can you describe it for us?

The culmination of my efforts and time in the IU photo program lead to my BFA thesis exhibition. My thesis, All That Bears, consisted of photographs that visualize my experience with maturation, and the transition from girlhood to womanhood. My exhibition had an opening that included my family and friends who came to support my hard work. I am incredibly proud of my work and the personal growth I experienced while making it.

Why did you want to become an intern at Pattern?

Pattern’s commitment to fostering creative output in Indiana is important, and I felt it would be a tremendous honor and opportunity to be a part of such a strong organization. Art is essential in shaping culture, and Pattern is playing a pivotal role in fostering and growing a vibrant creative community in Indiana. As an emerging creative myself, I was inspired by their mission, and I’m excited to play a role in it.

What’s your favorite spot in Indy, and why do you like to go there?

Silver in the City on Mass Ave is one of my all-time favorite Indy spots. I love perusing the trinkets, trying on the jewelry and sunglasses, and giggling at the quirky little gifts.

What’s one album you consider to be perfect?

There are so many albums out there that are absolutely incredible, but my mind first goes to The Beatles’ The White Album. The lovely sounds of “Dear Prudence,” McCartney’s “Blackbird,” and the ever-popular, always rocking “Helter Skelter” really show their dynamic range and craft.

If you were to go on a reality TV show, which one would you go on and why?

I would love to be a contestant on The Floor is Lava. I know it seems so silly, but I am confident that I can make it across the courses with ease. I mean, it can’t be that hard…right?

If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

I have to say Tim Burton. I grew up watching his movies, such as Corpse Bride, Dark Shadows, and Edward Scissorhands, and I would love to pick his brain. It’s always impressive to me how he’s able to build these strange worlds that are both creepy and whimsical.

What are your career aspirations beyond Pattern?

I’ve always had a love for teaching. I would love the opportunity to work with people in the arts and encourage creativity. Photography and audio are two mediums that I want to continue to use to tell people’s stories, both visually and audibly.
