Doesn't get much sweeter than this

SB306, MOkAO, ArtPrize, a new opening at Pattern

Big news: Senate Bill 306 was officially signed into law on April 16!

This legislation extends Indiana’s Film & Media Tax Credit program through 2031 and makes the credits transferable—an essential win that opens the door to outside investment and makes Indiana more competitive with other states.

While this is a huge step forward, it’s just the beginning. Now comes the hard (and exciting) work of using this tool to attract more productions, support local filmmakers, and build a real pipeline for jobs and investment across Indiana’s film and media industry.

And speaking of jobs and investment….

Got 7 minutes?

The Central Indiana Regional Development Authority (CIRDA) is working with Pattern to develop a creative economy strategy to elevate the region’s creative industries and culture, and we want YOU to be part of the picture!

It would mean the world to us if you would take and share this short survey to shape the focus areas for CIRDA’s creative economy strategy.

Take the survey here. (And make sure you do it before by May 12!)

Lights, Camera, Learn!

The Film Lab, a four-part workshop series, has been a resounding success, providing invaluable resources for all who are interested in filmmaking. With three workshops under our belt, Nine Essential Practices for Filmmaking in Indiana’ and Business, Finance, and Funding for Filmmaking,’ we are thrilled to see the future of film in Indiana. These workshops offer a unique opportunity to learn about the film industry in Indiana, network with film professionals, and engage in insightful Q&As.

Our third workshop, The Art of Dirty Laundry - A Hoosier Creative Collaboration,’ took place Thursday, April 17 in the SPACE Lounge. Rocky Walls, writer and director, led a panel of Dirty Laundry’s crew: Grant Michael, the director of photography; Eric Salazar, the music composer and producer; and Eric Thaddeus Andrews, the art director. We were taken behind the scenes at what it's like to work on a film set, how music production works, and how trust and preparation made Dirty Laundry what it is today.

Special shoutout to Pattern’s interns and fellows for creating the zine The Art of Dirty Laundry: How All the Creative Pieces Go Together to Make a Movie, and to Rocky Walls for allowing us to make his dream a reality.

Our final Film Lab workshop centers on independent film distribution and is hosted in partnership with Heartland Film.

Join us on May 15 from 6-8 p.m. for Demystifying Distribution.’ Keynote speaker and Indiana native Milan Chakraborty will join us remotely. After the keynote speech, there will be a short Q&A followed by guided breakout sessions and networking. Admission includes popcorn and a drink ticket.

The Film Lab series is made possible by our partners and sponsors. Our heartfelt thanks to Hoodox, 12 Stars Media, Heartland Film, and Film Indy, as well as the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and the Samerian Foundation, for their support.

Same wheels, new location!

Remember that bus we converted into a mobile retail shop? After a stint in Fountain Square, we've partnered with the City of Westfield to give the Next Stop Shop a new home on Grand Junction Plaza. The bus now features fresh, original artwork by Katelyn Winneroski and will be the headquarters for a curated vintage clothing shop, with over a decade of experience in markets around town.

You can catch the grand opening at Westfield's first summer farmers' market on Thursday, May 8, from 5-8 p.m. They'll be popping up all summer during the market, on weekends, and during community events.

If you're interested in renting the bus for your retail business, we've got openings in the fall and beyond. If Next Stop Shop sounds like the right next step for your small business, email [email protected] for more details.

ArtPrize adds category for Design

ArtPrize is an independently organized international art competition hosted by our neighbors to the north in Grand Rapids. You can learn all about it right here, but the big news is that they’ve added a category for design, which includes industrial, fashion, automotive, urban, and architectural design. Applications are open until May 30. Tell your friends, or better yet, submit your own work!

MOkAO

From J'Adore, the creators of Epicurean Indy, we presented MOkAO, a three-day edible, artistic, and immersive experience centered on coffee and chocolate, exploring labor and exploitation through a unique lens. MOkAO refers to the word for coffee in Yemen, one of the original marketplaces for coffee.

Here are some highlights:

  • On Friday, a culinary passport was served at Stutz’s newly-rebranded event space. Top chefs from Tinker Street, J’Adore, Magdalena, Bluebeard, and Leviathan Bakehouse presented a six-course dinner with expertly paired wines to complement notes of chocolate and coffee.

  • On Saturday, coffee and pastry providers and artisans from all around the city like Indy Dough, SALAMAT Cookies!, Blue Mind Coffee, Mochi Joy, Bumble + Bird, Stomping Ground, and many more, showed up and showed out! Notable favorites were Rabble Coffee’s Lemon Plum Iced Latte and SALAMAT Cookies!’s Matcha Brownie.

  • On Sunday, the open-fire brunch had original recipes featuring coffee from vendors like Gomez BBQ, Átame, Ono y Raíz, among others. Notable favorites included the cold brew-cured pork belly lollipop and the Tinker Mocha dry rub wings from Gomez BBQ.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Shayla Roy and Jacob Chaves, the design team wizards behind the zine, graphics, menu, and logo work. Their creativity and dedication brought the MOkAO event to life. We also appreciate the efforts of Youssef Boudarine and Ariel Hendrickson of J'Adore. Follow @jadorepastry, @mokao_indy, and @epicureanindy on Instagram for future events.
